Lion dance after the jump…

I rode through the city on Sunday and was lucky enough to catch a quick glimpse of some lion dancing. The chinese practice warding off evil spirits and welcoming good luck and fortune for the year in various ways. Im sure most of know and would have even seen a ‘Lion Dance’.  In tradition, on new years day, the chinese practice warding off evil spirits and welcoming good luck and fortune for the year in various ways. I was on my bike and was stuck in a pushing crowd, so the pictures are not that crash hot.

The lion normally consists of two people – one does the head and all the mouth and eye/ear movements, and the other does the back and back legs. Really good dancers are said to be kung-fu experts and have crazy agility. Here the lion blesses the entrance and with the accompanying drums – start the dance to ward off evil spirits that might be dwelling in the shop…

One of the main tricks of the dance is for the lion to ‘eat’ the cabbage that you can see hanging from the ceiling – along with the ‘ang-pow’ that will contain money (which actually amounts to the pay of services rendered by the lion dancers)

The dancer who controls the head stands on the shoulders of the dancer on the back to get to the cabbage….

…note massive drum on left…

The lion spits out the cabbage in pieces to simulate it being eaten and keeps the ang-pow.

they take a final bow to the owner and move on o the next business wanting their place to be blessed. Almost every chinese owned business will have lion dancers perform the ceremony.
